QHS recovers the stories and lives of queer citizens in West Alabama.  Undergraduate and graduate students lead the research, partnering with local citizens and institutions to develop new models of community engagement and southern history.

The project believes that when queer history is removed or hidden from history, the story is incomplete at best and unjust at worst.  As such, it offers different understandings of southern history. It centers on recapturing the daily lives of queer Alabamians over the past fifty years by recording oral histories, mapping centers of queer life, and collaborating with local libraries and universities to display and preserve memories of queer life.
